Why the Pomodoro Technique works
Developed by Francesco Cirillo in the late 1980s, the technique breaks work into short, fully focused intervals separated by deliberate breaks. The fixed 25-minute window lowers the barrier to starting, and the ticking deadline creates gentle urgency that reduces procrastination and multitasking.
The scheduled breaks matter as much as the work intervals. Stepping away every 25 minutes prevents the gradual attention fatigue that builds during long unbroken sessions, so your fourth pomodoro can be nearly as productive as your first.
A typical Pomodoro session
| Step | Duration | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Pomodoro 1 | 25 min | Single task, no distractions |
| Short break | 5 min | Stand up, stretch, water |
| Pomodoro 2–3 | 25 min each | Continue, 5-min break between |
| Pomodoro 4 | 25 min | Finish the cycle |
| Long break | 15–30 min | Walk, eat, fully disconnect |
Tips for better focus sessions
- Write down the task before starting the timer - one pomodoro, one task.
- If a distraction pops into your head, note it on paper and return to work.
- An interrupted pomodoro doesn't count - restart it rather than pausing.
- Adjust the intervals: many developers prefer 50/10 for deep work.
- Track completed pomodoros to estimate how long recurring tasks really take.
